Letters, 1837-1858.

Four letters written by Samuel Ryan Curtis. The earliest letter (3 pp.) is dated Sept. 15, 1837 at the Engineers Office, McConnelsville, Ohio to Charles Whittlesey, Topographic Engineer, Marietta, Ohio, and is about Curtis' work as Engineer on the National Road in Ohio. The second letter (1 p.) is dated June 23, 1846 at Camp Washington to President James K. Polk, written the day Curtis became Colonel of his regiment. Curtis recommends the appointment of Doctor Benjamin Stone of Somerset, Ohio, as surgeon or assistant surgeon in the regiment. Curtis' signature is at the head of a list of officers that include G. B. Arnold, Commanding General, Ohio Volunteers; A. F. Noles, Captain, Union Infantry; and J. E. Eaton, First Lieutenant Belmont Volunteers. The third letter (8 pp.) is dated Aug. 1, 1855 at Keokuk to his brother Henry B. Curtis. In it Curtis discusses the state of several of his businesses, including a ferry operation, and his opinions on the Republican ticket and the spread of slavery in the West. The fourth letter (3 pp.) is dated March 26, 1858 in Washington to Thomas J. McKean. Curtis writes of the proposal in the House to call out regiments to serve in the West, and tells McKean that he has mentioned his name to the Governor of Iowa in case a regiment from Iowa is called.

Born near Champlain, New York, Curtis graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1831. He was stationed at Fort Gibson in the Indian Territories (present-day Oklahoma) before resigning from the Army in 1832.
